Neues von Joep van Lieshout / Atelier van Lieshout / AVL

June 8  – September 29, 2013
Tuesday to Sundays 12.00 – 18.00 p.m.
AVL-Mundo, Keileweg 18, Rotterdam, the Netherlands

This summer, in the rough surroundings of the Rotterdam harbours, AVL-Mundo will present its disruptive, distorting and border-crossing opening exhibition Territory.

Just outside the bustle of the city, tucked between the fringes of the port of Rotterdam, are the creative headquarters of AVL-Mundo. During the summer months, this former feed mill with silos and surrounding grounds will host the exhibition Territory. This exhibition shows five internationally renowned artists: Itziar Okariz (SP), Philippe Meste (FR), Erik van Lieshout (NL), Kevin van Braak (NL) and Atelier Van Lieshout (NL). In addition, there will be a programme of events, performances, guided tours, films, concerts and dinners.

Territory is the opening exhibition of the AVL-Mundo Foundation, founded by artist Joep van Lieshout. The foundation aims to support culture - in the broadest sense of the word. From their headquarters various activities will be organized - from large utopian projects to (un)desired interventions. Also located within this creative haven is the studio of Atelier Van Lieshout. Here, one can wander amidst the Atelier’s installations, where they are designed, produced and subsequently find their way to museums all over the world. During Territory Atelier Van Lieshout will show existing works as well as work-in-progress, including a blast furnace, operating foundries and a soap factory.

Joep van Lieshout chose the artists of the exhibition himself, which logically ensures a connection with Atelier Van Lieshout. And, in the same way that Atelier Van Lieshout challenges issues, one can also expect the exhibition to be opinionated and slightly anarchic.

Territory is disconcerting, rough and disruptive. Borders and boundaries are being determined and delineated. The artists involved are known to go to extremes in their work, and won't hesitate to stretch or even break personal, ethical and sometimes moral boundaries.

Territory could be experienced as shocking. But: no shine without friction!

The exhibition Territory runs parallel to the exhibition of Museum Boijmans Van Beuningen in the onderzeebootloods (Submarine Wharf), XXXL Painting. Located on Heijplaat, opposite the AVL site. Both exhibitions open their doors the 8th of June
